Intern Perspectives: Ben Withey

Benjamin Withey, HGB marketing and communications Intern
July 10, 2018

Hello, my name is Ben Withey. I grew up in Charlotte and I graduated from Charlotte High School in 2015. Currently I’m attending Ferris State University where I study public relations and communication; I’m on-track to graduate next year in the spring of 2019. This summer I’m the marketing and communications intern here at HGB.

I have been interested in public relations (PR) since taking an introductory course in the subject earlier last fall; this summer I wanted an opportunity to learn more and demonstrate my skills in the field. When HGB offered me that very opportunity as a summer intern, I simply had to take it. HGB presents me with the ability to learn about healthcare PR and adapt my skills to a smaller community environment.

My ultimate career goal is to work for either Blizzard Entertainment in Irvine, CA, or Wizards of the Coast in Renton, WA, as a PR specialist. I’ve been enthusiastic about the game and entertainment industry for as long as I can remember, and would love to bring my writing and public relations skills to that arena someday. Until then, however, I enjoy using my writing to help health care professionals get their message to the communities they serve. Earlier this week I heard that people were attending a lunch and learn from Dr. Nicholas Doman because they saw our press release in the weekly paper. That’s amazing to hear as a future PR professional.

My favorite experience from school happened this last spring when I was able to travel with the Ferris State Athletic Pep Band to Sioux Falls, SD, and watch the NCAA Division II men’s basketball final four. Ferris State became the first Michigan school to win the NCAA Division II men’s basketball national championship! Some of my hobbies, both at school and here at home, include playing basketball, playing many different video games, watching sports and esports, playing Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition with friends, and playing in multiple concert and pep bands at FSU. My favorite experience from HGB so far has been getting to interview, and write the story for, Cheryl Laverty as she celebrated her 50th year working at HGB.
